9 Things to Watch in April on Netflix, HBO, and More

Spring has sprung and so has a new crop of never-ending content to watch and stream in April on Netflix, HBO, and more. A mix of new shows, new seasons, and streaming movies runs the gamut of genres and subjects: a nature doc, a Victorian period piece, serial killers, dragons, and the return of Noah Centineo—there’s truly something for everyone. Before it’s really time to go outside, here’s what to stream next month:

The Twilight Zone, CBS All Access, April 1

Produced by Jordan Peele (who also hosts), the iconic 1959 sci-fi series hosted by Rod Serling is revived in a set of episodes with a stellar cast, including Taissa Farmiga, Adam Scott, John Cho, Kumail Nanjiani, Ginnifer Goodwin, Sanaa Lathan, Tracy Morgan, Greg Kinnear, Zazie Beetz, Seth Rogen, and Chris O’Dowd.

Our Planet, Netflix, April 5

An eight-part documentary sees the return of beloved nature narrator David Attenborough, whose voiceover you recognize from Planet Earth and Blue Planet. The message of this series, however, isn’t just “whoa, Earth is so beautiful and cool”—it’s about saving the planet. “In just four decades, the number of wild animals has halved, and biodiversity is declining in every region of the world, all a consequence of the way we have chosen to live. It is a global catastrophe,” Attenborough says in a companion book being released with the show.

Native Son, HBO, April 6

After a premiere at Sundance, an adaptation of Richard Wright’s classic novel about a young black man growing up in Chicago’s South Side in the 1930s arrives to HBO. Celebrated playwright Suzan-Lori Parks wrote the screenplay, with A24 distributing, and critics have praised the lead performance of Ashton Sanders, who played Chiron in Moonlight.

Killing Eve, Season 2, BBC America, April 7

The year of Sandra Oh continues apace with the return of the U.K.’s perfect ladykiller series, with Oh and Jodie Comer back in the roles of Eve and Villanelle. When we last left the pair, Villanelle had been stabbed by Eve, and the show picks up right there, as in, 30 seconds later. Never a dull moment with these two, thank goodness.

Fosse/Verdon, FX, April 9

Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams play Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, one of the most legendary creative partnerships on Broadway. The two had as tempestuous a relationship as any in show business, which the series explores with (hopefully) some fabulous dance sequences.

The Silence, Netflix, April 10

Netflix’s answer to A Quiet Place is a new horror-thriller set in a world in which evil creatures hunt their prey via sound. Stanley Tucci plays Kiernan Shipka’s dad, and it looks like this movie is setting itself up as a kind of Bird Box sequel.

The Perfect Date, Netflix, April 12

Your ex-boyfriend Noah Centineo is back on Netflix in another rom-com, in which he plays Brooks Rattigan, a cute high school nerd who realizes he can make money by posing as a plus-one/boyfriend to those in need (and, of course, starts an app to do it). Let’s see if he can win us back.

Game of Thrones, Season 8, HBO, April 14

The final winter is coming, finally, to HBO, where Game of Thrones will wrap after eight years of making us cringe, cry, and talk about dragons. At the end of season seven, part of the Wall at Eastwatch came down (oops), so be prepared for some White Walkers running amok as we say goodbye to the show.

Gentleman Jack, HBO, April 22

Sally Wainwright (Happy Valley, Scott and Bailey) gets her U.S. debut with this spunky period show about Anne Lister, an English landowner and industrialist who is often called “the first modern lesbian.”
